LIFE

The biscuit or the potion?

MEL NOAKES

If I was to say Alice in Wonderland to you what would you think? Would you remember the Queen of Hearts or the Madhatter and his tea party?  Would you remember Alice chasing a rabbit down a hole or something entirely different?

When I think of Alice in Wonderland I think of the little girl that drank the potion and shrank. Many of us it seems, drink a potion early in life that makes us somehow believe we are meant to be small and fit through the small door in life.

When I think of Alice in Wonderland I think of the little girl that drank the potion and shrank.

Do you sit at the “adults table” and feel you don’t quite belong? Do you feel that you’re not quite big enough to fill the chair you’re sitting on? You may have heard of this as “Playing small” and not “shining your light”.

Does this sound all too familiar?

By shrinking and allowing yourself to diminish it makes you feel frustrated, unhappy and yes even angry that you’re simply taking the same uninspired steps day after day after day.  You may even be scared that by you shining your light and fulfilling your own potential that you’ll out grow a relationship, out shine a colleague or boss and that will ultimately lead to you being rejected.

Unless you take action to unpack these issues, they will simply fester and grow and you’ll never allow yourself to take a bite of the biscuit you need to fulfill your full potential.

So what is the biscuit I hear you say?

The biscuit is the “food” that feeds your soul and nourishes you so you can grow into the full size you, the one that is able to fill the room.  The biscuit is the belief that you are indeed worthy of living a full life and having the courage, the strength and confidence to claim it.

It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of saying to yourself “but who am I to deserve this?” “I’m wrong to ask for more”.  But here’s the thing, who are you NOT to demand more for yourself?   Each of us is unique, each of us deserving of a life we love and the world needs you to be magnificent!

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?  What would you become if you could dare to be different?

“Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
