MIND

You are enough

MEL NOAKES

It’s hard being a woman today. We’re meant to look like a supermodel, have a high flying career, be a cook, lover, cleaner, confidant, daughter, mother and friend and never break a nail. Even Superwoman would struggle!

It’s no wonder many women can feel overwhelmed, inadequate and even worthless when there are such high level of expectations on us. You put everyone else first, trying desperately to please everyone and often forget to please yourself.

Why is it that everything else comes first, irrespective of how important it really is to you, and you come last? Why is it that you worry if you’ll be enough and accepted if you show any sign of weakness?

It’s hard to fight back under the weight of expectations when you feel that you don’t deserve to have more, be more

It’s hard to fight back under the weight of such expectation when you feel that you don’t deserve to have more, be more. Why should YOU be different to everyone else and aren’t you selfish if you don’t put others first? Who are YOU to ask for more?

Before you get to burn out, dropping all those plates you’re spinning, having the smile you’ve painted on start to crack, consider the quote from Marianne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.”

You need to understand that you, YES YOU! are enough. That everything you are and all you have is enough. That might be uncomfortable for you to hear, even painful for some of you. But allow that to sit with you and ask yourself these three questions:

  • Where in my body do I know that this is true?
  • What would change if I allowed this to be true?
  • What one step do I need to take towards making this true?

You have always been enough, the change you need to make is to believe it.

Thank you for writing this blog Mel, it’s just what I needed to read right now. I realised I needed to have a discussion with my mum about mychildhood to let go of some of the baggage I was carrying. Thanks for inspiring me.

Linda, I’m so glad to hear you’ve taken action as a result of reading this. To help, make some notes about the outcome you want from the conversation with your mum and maybe some key points you want to cover so you know you stay on track. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
